There has, in an industry in which the unusual is accepted as commonplace,
never been anything quite like The Beatles, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George
Harrison and Ringo Starr, to whom showbusiness’ favourite superlative ‘fabulous’
is the only description applicable.
Their first year as recording artists began with the release in October 1962 of
“LOVE ME DO”, a modest success which sold 100,000 copies, mainly in the North
of England where their following was already firmly established.
But since then . . .
THEY sold more than four million records; THEY won a Gold Disc for one million
sales of “SHE LOVES YOU”: THEY saw their LP “WITH THE BEATLES”
notch up advance sales (in England) of 250,000—three weeks before release; THEY
won Silver Discs for sales of 250,000—plus copies of “PLEASE PLEASE ME”,
“FROM ME TO YOU” and “SHE LOVES YOU”:
It was in school in 1956 that John, Paul and George met, formed a group—
Ringo didn’t join until the summer of 1962. For four years they entertained in Liver-
pool’s clubs, pubs, church halls. Once they were booked into a strip club in the city’s
Chinatown area.
In 1960 they were selected by Larry Parnes to accompany Johnny Gentle on a
tour of Scotland, and afterwards went to play in Germany at a Hamburg night club.
Back in Liverpool in December 1960, they appeared for the first time as The Beatles
at a suburban Town Hall. Their reception was rapturous. Three more visits to Hamburg
followed and their popularity in Germany became as great as in Britians’ North West.
During one trip to Germany they were asked to accompany British singer Tony
Sheridan on a recording date. They did, and that is how their personal manager Brian
Epstein came to hear about them.
Brian, working in a record store, started to receive requests for the recordings
The Beatles had made. With difficulty he obtained a supply and found they were
immediately sold. He decided to investigate—found The Beatles were playing in
Liverpool’s Cavern Club a few hundreds yards away from the store. He went to see
them, was immediately impressed by what he saw and offered to manage them.
First attempt to get the Beatles on disc met with no success at all. “I was told
there was already too much of that type of material,” says Brian. “Then I went into
H.M.V. record shop in Oxford Street, London, to have some tapes transferred to disc.
As soon as the people there heard them, they advised me to get in touch wnth George
Martin, Parlophone’s recording manager”. Martin displayed the same perception as
Epstein and was immediately charmed by their delightful, off-beat humour and friendly
personalities, as well as their ability as a vocal group able to produce original material.
Other successes which came their way in that momentous first year, were a bill-
topping T.V. appearance on SUNDAY NIGHT AT THE LONDON PALLADIUM
and two awards in the 1963 Melody Maker Pop Poll—Top Vocal Group and the top
vocal disc with “PLEASE PLEASE ME”—and the announcement of plans for their
first film, to be scripted by noted Liverpool writer Alun Owen.
Capitol Records of Canada, Ltd. picked up the Beatles recordings early in 1963.
and released “Love Me Do”. Radio Stations took little notice of this debut disc, but
Capitol’s release of “Please Please Me” received a great deal of air play. Record
buyers liked the Beatles sound on their next disc “From Me To You” and Canadian-
Capitol felt it would only be a matter of time before Canadian teenagers really
swung the Beatles way—and the release of “She Loves
You” in this country was the record to do it! “Beatle-
mania” spread fast as “She Loves You” became a chart
topper and Canadian best seller. Capitol’s release of the
album “Beatlemania With The Beatles” was an instant
success as the Group’s great new sound won the hearts
of teenagers on this side of the water.
“Twist And Shout” contains “She Loves You”,
plus all the other hits of The Beatles ... It’s a great album!
